Introduction

Status Ailments are the foundation of DragonSword: Awakening's combat system. The five core ailments — Knockdown, Shock, Freeze, Airborne, and Bleed — each create unique combat interactions that drive the tag combo system. When ailments stack across heroes, they trigger Signal Skills and Switching Signals that form the game's devastating combo chains. Understanding how each ailment works, which heroes apply them, and how they interact with one another is the single most important knowledge a player can have for mastering DragonSword: Awakening's combat.

Core Mechanics

Each Status Ailment has a specific trigger condition and duration. Knockdown and Shock are immediate-impact ailments that create combo windows — Knockdown sends enemies prone for 2-3 seconds while Shock stuns briefly with bonus lightning damage. Freeze uses a Frost Gauge that fills progressively with ice damage before triggering a full freeze lasting 3-5 seconds. Airborne launches enemies for juggle follow-ups, enabling extended aerial combo chains. Bleed is the only DOT ailment, stacking for increased tick damage and effective against high-HP targets. When two different ailments are active on the same enemy, a Signal Skill automatically triggers — this is the core damage-dealing mechanic. Stacking the same ailment twice has diminishing returns (duration extension only), making diverse ailment teams significantly more effective than homogeneous ones. Bosses have varying resistances that can negate specific ailments entirely.

Advantages

Understanding ailment interactions is the key to high-level play. Knockdown+Shock creates the longest stun window for safe DPS opportunities. Freeze+Airborne triggers a shatter effect for the highest single-hit burst damage in the game. Diverse ailment teams (3 different ailments) maintain the highest Signal Skill uptime and provide resilience against boss resistances. The ailment system creates meaningful hero differentiation — each hero's combat identity is defined by their ailment type. This design encourages team diversity and prevents any single hero from becoming universally dominant.

Challenges

Bosses have ailment resistances — some are immune to specific ailments entirely, particularly in Very Hard dungeon content. Stack diminishing returns apply when the same ailment is applied twice, making double-ailment teams less effective than diverse ones. Bleed is the weakest ailment for combo chains since it does not trigger immediate Signal Skills, relying instead on sustained damage over time. The Frost Gauge mechanic requires sustained application before freezing, making it timing-dependent and vulnerable to interruption. Players who rely on a single ailment type will struggle against resistant bosses, forcing team composition adjustments that may not align with preferred playstyles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can bosses resist Status Ailments?+
Yes. Bosses have varying resistances to different ailments. Very Hard dungeon bosses may be immune to certain ailments entirely. This is why diverse ailment coverage across your 3-hero team is essential — you need backup options when your primary ailment is resisted.
What happens when the same ailment is applied twice?+
Stacking the same ailment on the same enemy has diminishing returns. The second application extends the duration slightly but does not double the effect. Diverse ailment teams (different ailments per hero) are always more effective than stacking the same ailment twice.
Which ailment is best for beginners?+
Knockdown is the most beginner-friendly — it creates long combo windows and pairs well with every other ailment. Lute (Knockdown) is available from the start and has a straightforward DPS rotation. Once you understand timing, add Shock from Aria for the powerful Knockdown+Shock Signal Skill.
